About the Author
Luke Humphrey is head coach of Hansons Coaching Services and a member of the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project. Humphrey holds a B.A. in Exercise Science from Central Michigan University, an M.S. in Exercise Science from Oakland University, and is a Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist with the American College of Sports Medicine. Humphrey is also a professional distance runner with top 10 and podium finishes in major U.S. running races from 10K to marathon, as well as two-time qualifier for the Olympic Trials.

Kevin and Keith Hanson are elite running coaches and co-founders of the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project. Kevin has earned multiple Coach of the Year distinctions in recognition of the performance of athletes racing in his programs.

Great book if you know what you're buying

I pre-ordered this book and received it within a day of the release date. This is NOT a how-to-run book, but it is a very well-written and very methodical approach to training for a goal time in a half-marathon event.

A couple of things to consider: 1) This method is based on an 18-week training window before your race date, and there are multiple admonitions to deviate only minimally from the plan. So, don't buy this book hoping you will get its full benefit if your race is only a few weeks away. 2) There isn't a page or two you can just flip to and find "your" plan. Goal time, fitness level and past running experience, body weight and expected running conditions all factor into the plan.

I quickly realized that my first read through wouldn't suffice. I've since gone back through with my notebook and calculator to figure my own needs using the formulas and tables provided for training times and intensity as well as nutritional and hydration needs.

The reader should also know from the outset that this method of training doesn't look much like what you'll find if you search online for half-marathon training plans; there are six running days each week (except for the first weeks of the Beginner & Just Finish Programs), and no prescribed cross-training. The creators and author are serious about mileage and the benefits of specificity of training: if you want to be a better runner, you need to run a lot.

Obviously, I don't know yet if I'll be successful with this method, and I have real concerns about making time for the almost daily training required to follow the plans here. I do feel confident that anyone following this plan would make great improvements toward a well-chosen half-marathon time goal.

The principles in this book will make you a better runner, PERIOD!

I've been a runner for over 25 years and am a student of the sport. I can easily say that this is the most outstanding book on run training! I say "run" training because this book should be read by every runner training for any distance.
The author does a great job of communicating the physiology behind the method. Additionally, the author provides great insight for each type of workout. For this reason, I refer to the book often to ensure I get in a quality, purpose driven run.

You may know of the author's earlier book, Hanson's MARATHON method. I own that book as well. While the majority of the sections are similar, I enjoyed the newer one's workout table organization more.Much easier to reference for quick glances of target pace for example.

By nature, I enjoy helping others become better runners. Don't look at the plan and be discouraged by it's 6 days per week. If you're not already running 6 days COMFORTABLY, then build up to that frequency GRADUALLY. Happy training!!!

armed with a better sense of science

I was a runner in high school, stopped running for roughly 6 years for school, and then restarted in the middle of medical school. When I started training again, armed with a better sense of science, physiology, and medicine, the Hansons training approaches appealed to me greatly. Their Marathon Method books took me from zero miles to a 3:22 marathon in the span of ~1.5 years (and I'm still improving, rapidly). I purchased this book for my wife and have largely stolen it back from her.

Pros:
- the two plans offered are structured very similarly (beginner/advanced) in terms of the types of workouts runners can expect to do on a weekly basis (and when to do them)
- the 'rhythm' of the plans is superb; every day of the week is consistent (Tuesdays for intervals; Thursdays for tempos; a long run on Saturday or Sunday). Half marathon training should be incredibly simple for 97% of runners, and Luke does a great job keeping the training simple for readers of this book
- the science at the beginning is dense, but it is consistent between this and the Marathon Method. Let it sink in over time and you'll see some recurring themes to guide your training and help you understand why the training plan is structured the way it is

Cons:
- these plans require dedication on the part of the runner; I encourage people using this book to keep a detailed log with a running total of how many days they miss during the duration of the training plan. If you're going to miss a day a week of training this plan will lose its efficacy.
- if you only can train 3 or 4 days a week, this plan is not for you
