Die Komplexit�t der individuell zu bew�ltigenden Aufgaben steigert sich zunehmend. Einerseits wird das Streben nach immer mehr Flexibilit�t und Mobilit�t den Mitgliedern der Gesellschaft auferlegt, andererseits werden diese Attribute zunehmend aus Eigeninitiative heraus gew�nscht und auch gefordert. Der technologische Status Quo erlaubt bereits gro�e Schritte in eine sukzessiv steigerbare r�umliche Unabh�ngigkeit, birgt jedoch noch viel ausbauf�higes Potential. Noch vor wenigen Jahren fristete das Thema WLAN ein Schattendasein, da es f�r die breite Masse weder erschwinglich war, noch eine tats�chliche Alternative zu den bestehenden kabelgebunden Netzwerken bot, was die Entwicklung und Sicherheit belangte. Die Popularit�t und Verf�gbarkeit hat in der Zwischenzeit eine enorme Entwicklung hinter sich, weshalb sich diese Arbeit mit der Thematik auseinandersetzt und erste Einblicke bieten soll. In Kapitel 2 findet zun�chst eine Heranf�hrung an das Thema WLAN statt. Hier werden ein genereller �berblick und ein Exkurs in die Historie von drahtlosem Netzwerken beschrieben und ein Vergleich zu Ethernet gezogen. An der rasanten Entwicklung bzw. Verbreitung von WLAN sind zwei Institutionen ma�geblich beteiligt. Zum einen handelt es sich dabei um das Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), zum anderen um die Wi-Fi Alliance. Aufgrund dieser Relevanz werden diese beiden Organisationen in Kapitel 3 kurz erl�utert. Kapitel 4 betrachtet WLAN dann etwas dezidierter und detaillierter und geht auf die Funktionsweise der Technologie ein. Da jedoch Innovationen in der Regel (noch) nicht ganz ausgereift sind, was auch in diesem Fall zutrifft, treten mit der neu erlangten, weitl�ufigeren Freiheit auch Sicherheitsl�cken auf, deren Problemstellung und L�sung sich Kapitel 5 annimmt. Wie bereits oben erw�hnt, steckt der technische Fortschritt erst in seinen Kinderschuhen und wird sich in den n�chsten Jahren erwartungsgem�� weiterentwickeln. In diese Zukunft erfolgt daher schlie�lich eine kurze Vision in Kapitel 6.
