Real Time Travel, Sensibly Priced

H.G. Wells made time travel sound pretty easy, and many authors have followed suit. Create your machine, turn a dial, and presto, you're some-when else. You're pretty sure when you are, and if you twist the dial back to the original position, you go home. Mr. Stilwell doesn't buy that. In his universe (and probably ours as well) time travel is hard. There's no dial that can get your one day, on month or a million years forward or backward reliably. It's trial and error and error and error. I would have to say that this is a thinking person's time travel novel (No disrespect to Mr. Wells - his works were amazing, just different presuppositions and less available science at the time).

On top of pretty good science, Mr. Stilwell does pretty good fiction as well. His characters have some depth, and they grow through their experiences in the story. I particularly like the development of the AI. I found its growth through the story compelling and believable.

Overall, I'd recommend this book to those who want a different take on time travel. There are other good time travel stories out there, but I think this one offers some unique ideas worth exploring.

If someone wanted to reboot "Lost In Space" please use this book. It is everything time travel is, was,could be and more. Characters are believable. The pace of the book is great and keeps your interest. The ending, surprising.

Well thought out and well-written. True time travel novel, with developed characters (a little too developed at times). Well worth a read even at a standard $2.99 price level, and certainly as part of kindle unlimited.

Burg (coauthor, The World Almanac of the American Revolution, Pharos, 1992) competently delivers a narrative summary and chronology of major events in the United States and throughout the world during the Depression. He offers seven chapters, each covering one or more years; brief contemporary quotations from politicians, journalists, authors, and advertisements; and 80 black-and-white photographs. The appendixes contain a selection of primary sources, mainly New Deal statutes and other documents, and capsule biographies. The focus is somewhat different from that of existing reference series such as Britannica's "Annals of America," which is stronger on primary sources, and Time-Life's "This Fabulous Century," which offers better photographs. More recent competition comes from Victor Bondi's American Decades, 1930-1939 (Gale, 1995), which has a topical arrangement, a more attractive layout, and greater scope beyond politics but lacks the quotations. This is done from a physiscist's perspective starting with a discussion of the basis for simple beam ananlysis. It proceeds through optimal constraint and flexure design, along with actuator and detector selection. Simplified design examples are included. Finally, a selection of construction materials along with their physical properties are presented, along with a discussion of optimization on that basis.

nothing short of excellent for the beginner. I believe the statistics refresher material is extremely well integrated, enough to make for fast reading for the more advanced. I like the approach very much.

James Stone's monograph: 'Independent Component Analysis'

James Stone's monograph is a refreshing new book amongst the many other `new books' on Independent Component Analysis (ICA). The author brings his teaching experience to present the theory and practice of ICA in a highly accessible form using a duplication of words and straight-forward mathematics.

Particular attention is given in the earlier chapters to the description of the linear signal mixing process giving the Reader a good basis for understanding the fundamental assumptions upon which ICA and its application to Blind Source Separation are based.

The book is aimed at the Reader with a technical but not necessarily formal mathematics background. Illustrative examples and functional algorithms in MatLab are frequent and references are made to the author's available electronic resources. As such it is suitable to both the newcomer to ICA, and to the more expert engineer or scientist.

The best introduction on the subject

I can't stress how reader friendly this book is. It is by far the best introduction on component analysis. It is written in such a way that those with a weaker math background can understand it while those with years of experience will not be bored, at certain times it even reads like a story.

It addition to being readable the book contains an impressive amount of content for its size. This content is presented in an organized manner, and in such a way that the user can immediately apply the techniques to their own problems.

If you are interested in independent component analysis or one of its relatives I highly recommend this valuable, reasonably price book.

Dare I Say That This Book Was Actually Fun...

I am at a career cross-roads and have also been a health coach in nutrition for the past two years. I decided to get this book in order to dig deeper into chemical reactions and their interplay with cells that lie at the base of human health and disease. My goal was also to gain a foundation of how medicine treats illnesses. The last time I studied cells and chemicals academically was over a decade ago in high school biology and chemistry. This book was great! Many drawings to illustrate what is happening in the body, as well as charts to organize groups, and clinical boxes to highlight patients with a particular condition.

About the Author
Katherine Arnup is a social historian, professor, and life coach. She is a recognized expert on issues related to loss, aging and dying and its impact on families and communities. Her most recent scholarly publication was Death, Dying and Canadian Families, published by the Vanier Institute of the Family. As a certified professional coach, Katherine focuses on helping people through all sorts of transitions Katherine has felt loss and its impact first-hand. Despite a profound fear of death, she became her sister’s caregiver, confidante, and advocate when she was dying of cancer at the age of 51. The experience was life-changing – Katherine recognized the importance of being present and showing up for the more challenging experiences of life. The loss of her sister led to hospice training and volunteering each week for more than a decade at a residential hospice. Katherine has sat with countless families and friends as they experience the sadness and struggle of losing loved ones. She is a passionate advocate for providing dignified and caring support for dying people and their families. Katherine has been a university drop-out, a hippie, a grade one teacher, a graduate student and a university professor. She is a family caregiver, a mother, a grandmother, a Buddhist, a late-in-life wife, a guitar player, and a recent convert to the ukulele. She lives with her partner in Canada's capital city, Ottawa, Ontario.

Take time for this!

I've just finished reading this and I can honestly say that it is extremely well written, comprehensive and compassionate. There is lots of practical information; good, important questions to ask yourself; and a deep understanding of the subject matter. In various ways Katherine asks how you want to show up for your parents during the final phase of their lives; and the corollary: how do you want to show up for the rest of your own life?
Whether for your own parents or to suggest to a friend going through this, this is the time of our lives when such a guide is invaluable.

Wonderful book

The book came out soon after my mom passed away from Alzheimer's disease. I really wish I had had some of the information provided earlier on. It would have made the whole process of helping mom live and die somewhat easier in many ways.
The author provides a map of sort to bring up the subjects of caregiving and end of life decisions with loved ones and to navigate the highs and lows inherent to a caregiving journey.
I highly recommend this book: its guidance will be a blessing and a comfort to all caregivers.

A timely read for those with aging parents who want to provide compassionate care

An excellent read for those with aging parents -- so many of us today -- who want to face the issues of health care, elder care, aging and even end of life with constructive, open and proactive action.

It's also a guide for caring for ourselves as those who want to provide the best and most compassionate care and support to our aging loved ones.

Highly recommended.
