It's what I expected, but probably not you.

I made the mistake of reading this book while waiting in line for the doors to open during a Black Friday sale. It was on the third day of my overnight camping spree in the front of our only towns Best Buy store. I was just waking up from a power nap and I decided to find something to read on my kindle tablet. Looking back on it, it was a funny coincidence because I remember feeling like a bum--camping on the ground for the third day in a row--and I searched the word "bum" on my kindle. This book popped up and I liked the illustrations on the cover so I bought it and began to read. By about the 22nd page I was rethinking my entire life and wondering why I stopped living so freely as I used to in my earlier years of life. In my twenties I was a reckless idealist who chased after the fairy tale love and smoked copious amounts of mind altering substances. Tens of pounds on the weekends and nearly a pound a day during the week....my father was a business man so there was never an empty jar in the house or lack of Bic lighters near the nightstand. Anyway I've settled into the cushy resolve as a software engineer and have lost sight of many dreams I used to have as a lost young man. This book stirred something in me as I continued to read it. I found myself not blessing anyone who sneezed anymore, I rediscovered the joy of crapping into my sweatpants and letting the soil run slowly to the finish line of my shoe tops and I went home. Black Friday sales suck and this book is super tits. Buy it and live again!

Beautiful story with some unexpected scenes

Beautiful story with some unexpected and surprising scenes. There are some similarities to On the Road when he describes his travels across the country. But, the way he weaves in and out of west coast to east coast, city to mountains, his descriptions of scenery, dogs, trees, characters... you name it. Its hard to describe but, this book takes you on such a journey. It is incredible.

My only criticism is that occasionally Kerouac makes up words or used them oddly. The reader sometimes has to pause and figure out what he is trying to say. Otherwise, a great piece of nostalgia for Californians and those interested in the 50's and early 60's.

Are business meetings a waste of your time?

How many meetings do you have at work where you leave thinking `what a complete waste of time and effort'?

If the answer is `a lot' or `most of them' then you really must read Al Pittampalli's excellent new book `Read This Before Our Next Meeting`.

The latest title from The Domino Project, Al's book highlights all that is wrong with the `traditional meeting' and suggests a better, more productive way to do business through the `Modern Meeting`.

Describing Microsoft Office email Appointments as `weapons of mass interruption', Al hits the nail on the head when he says that it's far too easy for people to call team meetings with little care or thought for the impact they might have on the recipients that have to sit through 'another bad meeting'.

Furthermore, he points out how meetings have become stalling tactics and havens for complacency and collective indecision in too many organisations around the world. Too many meetings with too many people (or the wrong ones) leads to inaction, compromise and mediocrity. `Less talk, more action' should be the new mantra.

Some of the key themes and ideas I took from the book which I will be trying to implement in future include;

- Thinking really, really carefully before calling a meeting and who you should invite. (Sounds obvious but is a very important point to make).
- Taking your time to circulate reading materials before the meeting and INSISTING that all attendees read them beforehand. If they turn up for the meeting without reading, then you are perfectly within your rights to ask them to leave. Time is precious and you certainly don't have time to go through the background info at the beginning. These types of `informaional meetings' are a big waste of your and everyone else's time.
- Simply turning up for a meeting isn't enough. All attendees should be expected to `turn up' in mind and spirit and contribute something to the meeting. Make it clear that they must add some value to proceedings (asking questions, sharing insight, offering to take on task) otherwise they aren't welcome or necessary and won't be invited to future meetings.
- Make sure that all meetings have a clear purpose, clear objective(s) and end on time. Put a big visual countdown timer on display so people know that you mean business.
- Ensure that someone makes good and proper notes from the meeting which are circulated soon after with clear action points for all attendees. I would actually suggest that if it's important, the person calling the meeting should also take their own notes and follow things up personally. Ideally, all attendees should be making their own notes too and taking responsibility for actions in the actual meeting (far too many do neither and then can't remember what was agreed to).

Like all Domino Project titles, this highly useful book is deliberately fast-paced and designed to be read in around 1hr (I read mine via Kindle App on my Windows Phone on the bus journey home from work).

So, if you're sick of feeling like your time is being wasted by pointless meetings or are simply looking for ways to improve your professional capacity and productivity at work, then I highly recommend you grab hold of a copy. Even better if you can share it with your colleagues too so they can understand where you are coming from.

Too basic!!

I was eager to read this book. I was hoping that the author had some valuable insight. I was disappointed. There is little research in this book. The book is mostly opinion. It is more of an essay than a real book. I was surprised to find that the author was advocating for strong top down management.

My impression was the author was mostly familiar with internal departmental meetings. I doubt if he has ever tried to resolve a very controversial problem or led complex project. His notion of a meeting is very narrow. His rules may work for departmental meetings but I doubt if they work with collaborative efforts outside the organization particularly if some of the partners are a little reluctant.

This is not to say I disagreed with everything. He does have some common sense rules that could apply to many aspects of management. I do believe time-lines and agendas are good tools. I agree that for many meetings limiting the attendance is more productive but to make it a universal rule for all meeting is a mistake. Action plans after a meeting are good. I agreed that everyone should do their homework before the meeting but if you kick out those that don't it would be easy to submarine any project you don't like.

My biggest disagreement with this vision is he belief that the leader should make a decision before the meeting has started. I value and respect the views of my department heads. I frequently change my preconceived notions based on information they possess. Better decisions are made with more facts. They are also more likely to support the decision if they help craft it and understand the reason behind it. Top down has its place but it is a mistake for many many issues.

The author has geared a book that is more design for "How" to solve a problem. His methods will not work for "Why" solve the problem. If the organization does not understand the why, it is often pointless to worry about the how. I suggest the author read up on change management.

The author has selected a topic that is a major issue in many organizations but he needs to do more research and rework his proposed solutions.

One of the things I *LOVED* about Al Pittampalli's, 'Read this Before Our Next Meeting' was the time it took to read it. Swiped through (kindle app on iPad) in less time than most 'traditional' meetings take to slog through. Like a quick trip to Chipotle's for a Burrito Bowl - it reads like nutritional fast food but leaves you seven-course meal satisfied - with seven principles for serving-up the 'modern' meeting.

Pittampalli leads and writes by example, the seemingly intentional brevity of the book appears to mirror his assertions of how you need to conduct your next meeting - with purpose, punctuality and preparedness. Meeting's must produce an action plan and it is your job as leader - to follow-up on all participant's progress.

In true Domino Project fashion, 'Read this...' delivers more like a manifesto (blogifesto?). Pittampalli gives voice to our collective consciousness riding just beneath surface:

"Like all human beings, we're terrified of making decisions. In the face of pressing, difficult decisions, we stall. Meetings are a socially acceptable and readily available way of doing so."

In the seven principles of modern meetings, Pittampalli pulls no punches on (the modern meeting) purpose. If you're not actively participating there's simply no room for you at the table next time. If a meeting needs to be called to advance a decision - then the meeting needs to be about conflict and coordination. Debate, decide, done!

'Read this...' fulfills with a hearty FAQ / how to. One of my favorite stand-outs for those who always feel that consensus must be reached:

Q: "What if I end up making a decision that not everyone agrees with?"
A: "Congratulations are in order. You're a leader."

My only criticism of this book is that it was not out a year ago when I was planning a huge conference for the very first time. We served a lot of pizza at our planning meetings. Among many other things, I learned that meetings are for meeting, not for eating.

About the Author
Teresa Johnston is currently working on her nursing diploma. She lives in Ohio with her husband and two children, Ben and Lily. This is her first picture book.

Brian Sendelbach spent years writing and drawing the absurdist weekly comic strip Smell of Steve, Inc. His illustrations have been printed in a variety of newspapers across the United States, and his "inspiredly silly" comics have been featured in publications by Dark Horse Books, Fantagraphics Books, and Nickelodeon. He lives in the Midwest with his wife, Elizabeth, and their two children. His first picture book, THE UNDERPANTS ZOO, was recently published by Orchard Books.

Really cute story

We first saw this book during my daughter's visit to the dentist, right after they showed us her front tooth was loose. We read it together and my daughter giggled at just about every page. She loved the book so much, she wanted to take it home with us,but knew she couldn't. After we got home I looked up the book and ordered it without telling her. 3 days later, she got the book in the mail and has been reading parts of it on her own as part of our nightly reading time. She has since lost both front bottom baby teeth, but still loves to read this.

Perfect for 5 and 6 year olds loosing their first tooth. Even younger children will enjoy the adventure and be prepared for the big step. Very cute, my 3 and 6 year old grandchildren enjoyed it.

A great page-turner of a history book!

While the perspective in this book seems decidedly Protestant, Coffin's focus is on the progress of men out of the stifling opression of freedom in the dark ages (esp.by the Catholic Church)to the freedom we may take for granted today. He tells the stories of various people who were willing to give up everything for the principle of freedom of thought.
On the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre-
"Catherine hastens to Charles' chamber once more. He is sitting in a chair, moody, angry, silent. He has acquiesced in the plan until now; but as the hour for its consummation approaches, is irresolute. It will be so mean to have the old admiral, and others who hace confided in his word, assassinated. Poor weakling that he is, there is still left a little of his better nature. The education that he has received from his mother - that the end always justifies the means - the school of falsehood in which he has been taught, has not quite obliterated all sense of what is right and honorable."
This book reads like a novel, not a history book. It is such a page turner that my children wore out one copy and have begun on another!

History for Homeschooling

Despite what others may have said about this book's qualities regarding homeschooling it remains one of THE best books on the foundation of American culture. The author attempted and succeeded to remain unbiased when writing upon matters of religion (i.e. Roman Catholic Church vs. Protestant Church). However, the obvious wrong done by the Roman Catholic Church during the Roman Inquisition (not just the Spanish) is made quite clear. Yet the author does not leave the Protestant church without some blame, for they did promote violence, wars, and some measure of persecution. The book does accomplish its goal by making the reader understand what liberty is and what it has cost. No homeschooling Christian (or otherwise) child should be without this book.

The Story of Liberty

I read this for pleasure, not for home schooling. It was outstanding! A fast and easy read, easily relating together the events over the past 700 years. Cofing clearly illustrates the slow struggle of the human race towards freedom ... tieing events together in a literary time-line. With such a clear conception of the tyrrants of the past, one can't help but draw parallels with contemporary tyrrants. I wish I had read this when I was in school. I am recommending it to all of my friends.

Lafable copee, ridiculous erorrs

Despite being toted as a college-level text (with a hefty price tag), this book is rife with typos, missing words and ridiculous formatting, including classics such as "existing the office" instead of "exiting the office." On top of this, the introductions to the playwrights distort their views and words to render them more politically correct. The editors make no mention of Strindberg's incredibly sexist views in the introduction to "Miss Julie". The "Topics for Critical Thinking and Writing" are so leading they aren't suitable for anyone more intellectually sophisticated than a middle-school student. All of this after it has gone through eight editions!

In summary, this collection is hastily assembled with little proof-reading and less thought and research put into the introductions and "Play in Performance" sections. Do NOT buy this anthology. You would be better served selecting the plays you want to cover and buying used copies of each play.

$104 !!!!!!

I remember reading and, subsequently, teaching earlier editions of this book. It's a handy collection -- with a particularly good translation of Lysistrata. But that was then, when the book was well under $25. Now it's $104!? That should buy a hardcover with color photos and DVD of famous productions. I know everything goes up in price, but what are we really doing to our students if we ask them to fork over so much money for literature?

Great Contemporary Anthology, Teaching Tool

As a university theatre professor, I find this one of the most comprehensive, useful drama anthologies out there. A wonderful introduction to a wide range of plays, with pertinent "windows" into production aspects of the plays, so students can understand them not only as literature but as blueprints for performance. And the textbook, while comprehensive, is much lighter weight than Worthen's or the Longman's, so students will be much more likely to show up to class with their texts actually in hand. In addition, I find the separarate Instructor's Manual complete with suggested syllabi and lesson plans most helpful in providing me with inspiration as I build various dramatic literature, theatre history, and introduction to theatre courses.
