About the Author
Jonathan Mugan is a research scientist focusing on machine learning. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin. His thesis was centered in developmental robotics, which is an area of research that seeks to understand how robots can learn about the world in the same way that human children do. He received his B.A. in Psychology from Texas A&M University.

An interesting, short read

The Curiosity Cycle is a short, interesting guidebook for parents, teachers and anyone else interested in promoting curiosity. The author, Jonathan Mugan, is a research scientist focusing on machine learning. His doctoral thesis centered on developmental robotics, which aims to understand how robots can learn about the world in the same way that human children do.

As someone with a philosophy undergraduate degree, who also studied a few years of engineering, I found this book to be richly deep in ideas. I found interesting parallels of the ideas in this book with some of the bold thinking that goes on at MIT's Lifelong Kindergarten program, part of MIT's Media Lab.

The preface lays out the reason for the book when it explains, "Curiosity leads to flexible and adaptive thinking. The world is changing fast: Rote memorization and brittle thought are not going to be sufficient, and being flexible and adaptive will be increasingly important as individuals have more power to determine their destiny." For me, as an educator, these words ring definitively true.

Mugan explains how the brain builds tentative understandings of the world that are constantly revised and updated. All that we consider true must be understood as tentatively true, subject to revision. This rings true to my mind.

The structure of this book makes the ideas easily digestible. Short sections of chapters recommend ways to promote curiosity in children: Encourage your child to act in uncertain environments; Encourage your child to predict the future; Encourage your child to articulate the current model.

The book hits in stride in chapter 3, Spinning the Curiosity Cycle. In this chapter Mugan explains how the curiosity cycle builds upon itself. This is chapter where I spent a lot of time thinking about how the minds of children are brought to life in the home and only refined in school. What of all the children whose minds are not brought to life at home? You cannot refine something that does not currently exist.
Where, outside the home, can we also bring children's minds to life? Museums? Libraries? Robotics teams? Where else?

What makes this book valuable is that I very much want to lend it to one of my most thoughtful friends. In the parenting that my friend does, he follows many of the paths suggested by Mugan. He wants his children to be flexible enough in their thinking that they'll succeed in whatever future arrives at their front door. We cannot know what that future will be, but we can know how better to prepare our children for it.

Curious and Curious-er!

The Curiosity Cycle is a fascinating read. It's a parenting book, a thesis, a how-to solutions manual, and also just a fun little topic. Can be devoured in one sitting, but draws you back to flip through again. And the ideas it contains gives me hope for the future of our children! There is so much pressure in education today for kids to fit a formula. To pass a test. To have access to the latest and greatest yet ironically obsolete gadget/technology in the classroom. While books and daydreams and big red foursquare balls gather dust.

What is a parent to do?

Read the Curiosity Cycle and recognize that the atmosphere you create at home (or the museum or park) and the way you talk with and to your children, how you answer their questions or play with them, is the BIGGEST antidote to an educational system that is either failing them due to mediocrity or squashing them with the Latest Trend in hyper-learning. It is also refreshing that the answer has very little to do with plonking children in front of a computer or tv screen!

I disagree with the reviewer who believed this book to be a long rambling opinion with no science behind it. Or something that is accessible only to parent with an IT/AI background. I was a humble Liberal Arts major back in the day. This person might have been hoping for more of a checklist or formula. Do this, IQ will increase x points. But that is not the point of the book.

Mr. Mugan gives loads of real-life examples, conversations, ideas on how to spark Curiosity as a mindset and a joyful habit - many taken from his own family interactions and experiences (experiments?). Verbal games you can play with your child. Beneficial computer games. He explains both the how and the why and give specific ways to teach, ask, foster, and nurture what he refers to as "flexible and adaptive thinking". The type of thinking that will encourage your child to be ahead of the game (or perhaps authoring the game!) that will be required by the Technology that is around the corner.

I especially appreciated his message that a physically active child is a happier, more open to learning child. (My paraphrasing). That getting out to play soccer and enjoy any outdoor fun activities is one important key for growing bodies and minds.

It is likely true that robots are our future. This excellent little book will help you equip your kids with the mindset and success to be their bosses rather than associates. To raise the shepherds, instead of the sheep. To be a leader in whatever field they choose. Or at the very least, kids who become grownups who fully enjoy their vocations and keep inquiring minds!

Skim the "read this" features. Read the free chapter he posted on his website. Then buy a copy for yourself, your best friend, your neighbor. ALL of our children deserve to be prepared for the ongoing technological explosion! To be simply curious kids.

Preparing Our Kids for a World Dominated by Smart Computers

There are timeless classics in the genre of parenting books, but times are changing faster than you can say "What To Expect The Toddler Years."

Enter The Curiosity Cycle - Preparing Your Child For The Ongoing Technological Explosion by Jonathan Mugan. It's the kind of parenting book that is so appropriate for this day and age because it addresses the increasingly digital world in which we live and raise our children. But guess what? Most of this book isn't even about technology, but rather how to nurture and maximize our children's inborn curiosity.

Mugan offers tons of ideas to feed the curiosity cycle through simple activities, games, and even just conversation starters. He also discusses how to deal with technology in a way that continues the curiosity cycle rather than kills it.

Very interesting read and applicable to all parents raising little ones 0-10ish.

About the Author
Vesma Grinfelds earned her B.A. Degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1971. While attending, she was a member of the bowling team and finished 2nd in the Intercollegiate Championships All-Events. Her professional bowling career started in July 1971 after winning her first title in Las Vegas. During the 20-year span of competitive bowling, she amassed 10 professional titles, 13 regional professional titles, 2 WIBC event titles, and 2 international titles (Japan and the Philippines). She has accomplished three 300 games and an 810 three game series. Vesma was a Master Clinician for the National Bowling Council for 12 years during which time she conducted seminars to bowling coaches and instructors concerning the teaching of bowling fundamentals and techniques. She was also a coach for the Philippines National Bowling Team for the Southeast Asian Games in 1981. During her bowling career, Vesma was a long time representative of the Brunswick Corporation. She was inducted into the U.S. Bowling Hall of Fame in 1991 for Superior Performance and the Professional Women's Bowling Hall of Fame in 1997. Currently, Vesma bowls occasional events and remains involved with the sport by supporting the budding bowling career of her son, Dzintars. She resides in San Francisco and is very active in philately.

Bonnie J. Hultstrand received her B.S. Degree in Physical Education from St. Cloud State College in 1960 and her M.S. Degree in Physical Education from Washington State University in 1966. After 39 years of teaching, she retired in 1999 as Professor Emeritus from the University of Idaho where she spent her last 24 years of teaching and coordinating the Undergraduate Physical Education program. Prior to the University of Idaho, she taught at the University of Wyoming, Washington State University, and had a four-year stint in the public schools. Her areas of teaching ranged from a variety of professional preparation courses to sport activities. Bowling instruction was always a significant part of her teaching responsibilities. In addition, her 18-year coaching career included the collegiate bowling team at Washington State University. Among her professional leadership and teaching awards are: Northwest American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AHPERD) Outstanding College/University Physical Educator of the Year (1998); Idaho AHPERD Outstanding College Physical Educator of the Year (1997); Idaho AHPERD Distinguished Service Award (1989); Associated Students of UI Outstanding Teacher Award (1986); College of Education Outstanding Faculty Award (1990); Chair of Faculty Council (1992-93); and UI Alumni Excellence in Teaching Awards. Bonnie is currently retired and resides in her northern Idaho lake home. She enjoys an active lifestyle that includes traveling, reading, golfing, and volunteering.

Not bad

This is a good book for beginning bowlers. It overviews everything and tells you how to pick up spares using the arrows. This book helped improve my score by about 100 pts.

Kiss My Math & Math Doesn't Suck

I am a mother that went back to college later in life. One of my classes was algebra. I had math anxiety and tried to find way to wiggle my way out of this class. The algebra class was very difficult for me. I could not understand the instructor or the book. I went to tutors,family members and friends and I could not get algebra. I failed the class. I was embarrassed and angry with my myself. I needed something right away. So my boyfriend and I went to Barnes & Nobles and purchased Kiss My Math & Math Doesn't suck. (I do suggest that you purchase both). So I had a six week break before I had to take the algebra class again. I am happy to say that I passed the algebra class with a B and I am looking forward to starting MATH 209 which is the second part of algebra. Danica was easy to understand and the experiences from other young ladies helped a great deal too. Thanks Danica!

Buy this for your daughter

This funny math book teaches girls that it's OK to be smart, and that they are perfectly capable of kicking a little pre-algebra butt.

McKellar takes a lightweight approach to math, but is deadly serious about it. In the prologue, she writes that "lots of people change their majors and abandon their dreams just to avoid a couple of math classes in college." Girls in particular, she emphasizes, often use their fear of math to keep them from learning the skills they'll need to succeed in life, and they start backing away from the subject in middle school.

And it's not just fear. Girls often don't see how they'll use math once they get out of school. Testimonials in Kiss My Math fight this. Stephanie Perry, the finance director for Essence magazine, explains how she uses algebraic formulas to stay on top of the magazine's financial performance. Jane Davis, financial strategist at Polo Ralph Lauren, was hired as an assistant buyer because of her facility with math. She describes determining inventory over time by finding the mean of a list of numbers.

McKellar -- famous for playing Winnie Cooper in the "The Wonder Years" but also a summa cum laude math graduate from UCLA -- uses simple language and lots of illustrations to teach pre-algebra. Each chapter covers a single topic, such as the distributive property or exponents. She clearly explains each topic, and includes problems for the reader to solve (answers are in the back). The author is generous with helpful notes and shortcuts.

A lively, breezy writing style makes it seem as if McKellar is sitting next to the reader. She uses examples girls can relate to, like clothes shopping, working on the school play, blind dates, parties, kissing and breath mints. It's like having the perfect math tutor. (I'm not a middle school girl, of course, but I just got finished having one. My daughter is starting high school this month.)

Especially good are the entries called Danica's Diary, which are true stories from the author's life as a student, actress and mathematician. One is titled: Dumbing Ourselves Down for Guys: Why is it so Tempting? McKellar gives practical advice on how girls can avoid this common pitfall.

I can't think of a better book to buy for a girl taking pre-algebra.

Seriously love Danica for writing this series! Every book she's done - from "Math Doesn't Suck" to "Kiss My Math" and "Math X" are all amazing. She is funny, connects with her young readers and has this amazing way of explaining math concepts in a way that it's impossible not to understand! For example, reducing numbers to their factors using the "birthday cake" method. I LOVE THAT.

Although it's written to appeal to girls, boys can learn from it too if they can overlook the references to boy crushes, makeup, etc.

This is how opening books should be written

Aside from being a strong opening in itself, the Trompowsky lets White avoid Black's pet Indian defenses and can be frustrating. In this book, Wells covers all of the main lines of the Trompowsky with just enough detail. Against the two critical lines, 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 Ne4 3. Bf4 c5!? and 3. ..d5 there, he offers a "Solid" move and an "Attacking" move, with one chapter devoted to each. Here are the chapters of the book, for the curious:

The book follows master-level Trompowsky games and Wells annotates them in a very instructive fashion. I learned to play the Trompowsky with confidence after just one reading of this book.
There is one pseudo-Trompowsky line that this book does NOT cover: 1. d4 d5 2. Bg5!? If you really want to play this line, you'll have to look elsewhere to learn it.

Best? opening book

This is the bible of the opening made popular by Julian Hodgson and other young British GMs. In his hands, it fits with his slashing, attacking style.
The book's 240 pages are chockful of original analysis and reveal the author's passion for this opening. There's a lot of clear explanations for lower-rated players as well as enough innovative lines that even GMs will need this book to tackle the Tromp. In fact, Jeremy Silman has called this work "magnificent" and described it as simply the best opening text he's ever seen.
A question for me remains why the opening is so under-represented in MCO 14. It's covered in about three pages.
By the way, look at Wells' other opening books too: The Complete Semi-Slave and The Complete Richter-Rauzer. According to Mr. Silman, they set the standard for those openings as well.

Good Book, Bad Opening

This is an excellent book, but it ignores the fact that the trompowsky isn't fun for white after 2...d5 or the various other lines in which white plays bishop takes knight and black takes back with the g pawn. The dark squares and bishop pair will usually give black a position in which he is anything but worse. Then there's also the problem with what to play against moves like 1...d5, 1...f5, 1...e6, and 1...c6. In the latter two you could transpose to e4 openings, but then why are you playing d4? And in the first two, what do you play? Either the main lines, which you're trying to avoid by playing the trompowsky, or some system like the London or Stonewall in which your opponent can just copy your moves and draw. I don't even recommend this opening as a secondary weapon, because you must have knowledge of benoni, open sicilian, and french advance structures to play the Tromp, and that's a lot of work for a surprise opening that isn't even that good.

Harrowing, controversial, engaging and deeply moving

Wallace Stegner's novel attempts to strip away the layers of mythology
created around songwriter, artist and organiser Joe Hill. Taciturn Swedish sailor,
fervent Wobbly, possible murderer, victim of conspiracy and, ultimately,
willing martyr - all these aspects of the legendary Trade Unionist are
explored in an effort to get to grips with the "real" Joe Hill.
Stegner has tried to penetrate the conventional IWW mythology around Hill, refusing
to accept the simplistic interpretation of an innocent man fitted up by the law.
Instead, the Joe Hill he writes of is human, multidimensional - possibly
guilty but a flawed hero nonetheless. Stegner explores the creation of a martyr andthe creation of a
myth. Reading the story of Hill adds a poignancy and human dimension to the
formulaic elegies of folksong and syndicalist tradition.

It's a novel, not a history

Of course it's not factual history! All these reviewer smashing the book because they didn't get history out of it need to look more closely. The front cover states that the book is "a biographical novel." And if you read the back cover, it says that the author is "blending fact with fiction" to tell a good story. In other words, it's not history, it's a fictional story based on a true story. So it never claims to be a history. It's not the author's fault the readers are oblivious to the clear subtitle of the book indicating it's a "novel." As a novel and a story, it's pretty darn good.

A Biographical Novel ? ! ?

Even a writer as gifted as Stegner can’t have it both ways. Many passages are obviously made up: Stegner couldn’t possibly know the characters' conversations or their private actions, much less their thoughts or intentions or fantasies. (Stegner describes quite tenderly a great many of Joe Hill's fantasies.) Many other passages might very well be made up; a reviewer would have to do some serious research before treating the book as a biography. To me the book is essentially a novel.

Stegner’s writing displays frequent flashes of his remarkable descriptive power, especially in his background scenery, setting the stage for the action: San Pedro Bay at night, the ‘bo jungles along the tracks, the IWW meeting halls, Salt Lake City in different seasons— he does it all so well, with such creative vocabulary. Stegner represents himself as Gus Lund, the saintly but practical Lutheran pastor who runs the Scandinavian Seamen's Mission in San Pedro. Lund likes Hill, is almost in awe of Hill’s raw intelligence and artistic talent. As Hill’s only ‘close’ friend, he comes to Salt Lake City for Hill’s trial. In these closing chapters of the book, Stegner fills page after page with Lund’s ruminations on Labor’s blind biases, its lack of morality, its indifference to the distinction between right and wrong, its quick resort to violence. Stegner's writing here is repetitive and tedious. It reads like a novel from the 1700s, where the plot is just a sketchy parable dripping with sermons of moral uplift. Since when did Stegner get so preachy?

Great read on epidemics from ancient to modern

Whether you are an armchair epidemiologist or just want a scary read, this book explores 50 different epidemics from 10,000 BC until 2014. Each outbreak includes a summary page and three to five pages of detail - perfect bite-sized chunks for reading a little at a time or doing a longer dive.
The prose is clear for the lay person but technically accurate for those who have a background in microbiology, as I do. It was refreshing to see this balance. It was also entertaining without being lurid.

I was familiar with many of these outbreaks as I've done a lot of reading on them, but Skwarecki provided many new details I didn't know, plus disease outbreaks I had not read about before. I thought each outbreak had just the right amount of information. Often it inspired going to the internet to read more about the period.

This is a book I highly recommend.

A Fascinating Tour of History’s Terrible Epidemics

In 50 short but succinct chapters – each about 4 to 5 pages long - the author guides the reader through various epidemics that have plagued the human race from about 10,000 BCE to the present. In each case, an affected geographical location/country/city is highlighted and the particular disease’s nature, means of spreading, effects on those infected, effects on society and eventual exit are all clearly described.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Each chapter is self-contained and does not rely on information presented in earlier chapters. Consequently, one can read a chapter or two or more and put the book aside for a while and come back to it later without having to remember anything about what’s been already read. I found this book to be well written in a prose that is clear, lively, accessible, friendly, authoritative and immensely captivating. Although this book can be enjoyed by anyone, I believe that a treat is to be had by those with a penchant for history - particularly for how and when epidemics have occurred and their usually devastating effects.

2nd Edition (1982?) - Absolutely the best book I've ever found for virtually anything one might want to know about that most useful and ubiquitous group of binary compounds - the oxides! If you're looking for information specifically about any metal oxide, The Oxide Handbook will beat any other reference hands down (e.g., CRC Handbook of Physics and Chemistry, etc.)! I just wish someone would start printing it again!

The book I used was a translation of the 1969 Russian edition by C. N. Turton and T. I. Turton. It is an extensive list of tables of the physical and chemical properties of all of the oxides. It is very useful; however, it should be updated.
