About the Author
informationDame Barbara Cartland (9th July 1901 - 21st May 2000)
was the world's most prolific author and is still constantly mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records. She wrote no less than 723 books in her lifetime of which 644 were her wonderful romantic novels and the remaining 79 were historical biographies, cookery and lifestyle books.

What is truly extraordinary is that when her publishers in 1977 demanded more and more Barbara Cartlands for her adoring public, she doubled her output at the age of 77 from ten books a year to over twenty. She averaged twenty books a year for twenty years and actually wrote her last book when she was 97.

So she wrote 400 books between the ages of 77 and 97, a feat no one has ever achieved in the past and is most unlikely to do in the future. To date five of her romances have been made into feature films.

Her publishers published 240 of the 400 romances, but even they could not keep up with Barbara, so when she died in 2000 she left 160 unpublished books, which are now all being published as the 'Barbara Cartland Pink Collection' at the rate of one a month by her son Ian as a tribute to his amazing mother.

In 1991 Barbara was invested with a Dame of the British Empire by Her Majesty the Queen for her services to literature.

This year is the tenth anniversary of Barbara's death and to mark the date Ian is re-publishing in October Barbara Cartland's first book "Jig-saw" as an exact replica of the original 1925 edition, which was an international bestseller at the time.

"My mother achieved so much in her long and active life," says Ian, "but her greatest legacy of all was the happiness and joy she brought to so many millions of people throughout the world with her wonderful romantic stories of true love and happy endings."

Interesting and informative

This textbook was a pleasure to read. It has timely—albeit liberally slanted—articles and excerpts, which foster critical thinking and interest most people. The information presented was clear and well-explored. I now feel more comfortable with the formal elements of argument. Thanks Rottenberg!

Good resource, but needs more student examples

One of the obvious positives about this book is that it covers a great deal of ground. Not only does it take you through the ins and outs of argument, rhetoric, claims, and the writing process in general, but it also has some worthy, engaging, and applicable topics (gun control, social media, the dangers of sports, childhood obesity, etc.) as basis for what students can expect to both read and write about.

The Elements of Argument is a resource that any college composition student should have (if they can find a copy at a decent price, that is). It starts general, with a chapter on what argument is, and then shifts to being more specific with chapters that give advice on such elements as making a claim, backing up claims with support, researching, debating issues, documenting and research writing, and understanding multiple viewpoints of a topic.

While the topics and the tips are helpful, it would have been more beneficial to simply see more examples in action. There are many writing pieces from various accredited new sources (Los Angeles Times, New York Times, etc), but there are not enough practical examples of student writing in action of the aforementioned elements of writing. Element of Argument does offer some examples, but some are not as helpful as one would hope.

Still, despite this, there are many helpful aspects to this book, and I think it would be a solid resource for any student just starting in college and needing some helpful tips on beginning the writing process.

About the Author
Ashley Kalym got the fitness bug at a very young age. Having been involved in various physical disciplines and activities, it was whilst training in the Royal Marine Commandos that Ashley was introduced to the value of bodyweight exercise. A long-standing, fulfilling and active career in calisthenics and bodyweight training has followed. Complete Calisthenics gives the reader the benefit of Ashley's years of research, training and personal experience, all under one cover.

One of the best two or three bodyweight systems out there

I consider this to be one of the top two or three books on bodyweight training. Not the most original, but it brings together progressions similar to Convict Conditioning (though using mostly different intermediate exercises), it combines both active CC-style exercises with some basic gymnastic static holds, like those found in Building the Gymnastic Body, into a comprehensive workout, and it goes into the use of neuromuscular tension as the real source of strength somewhat like Pavel's "Naked Warrior," but applied over a much wider range of movements. He also explains how straight-arm exercises can build loads of strength and size in the biceps, and both how to strengthen soft tissue and what signs to watch for to prevent soft tissue damage.

Some things worth noting are first, this system is more oriented to intermediate to advanced trainees rather than beginners. It does give a few variants that are easier than the basic beginning point of the system, which is mostly "Step 5" exercises in Convict Conditioning progressions, but that beginning point and harder is the focus of the system. Second, there are no bridging movements. I can only speculate on the reasons for this, but likely it is either because Mr. Kalym believes they are unsafe for the spine (they are still controversial from Furey's Combat Conditioning and Wade's Convict Conditioning, where some criticize them as being bad for the soft tissue of the spine), or because he lacks shoulder flexibility to achieve full bridges, as some people seem to naturally lack the skeletal structure to achieve them. I suspect his gymnastic holds, such as the back lever, planche, and the human flag, substitute for training the erector spinae and related muscles.

It is presented clearly, with pictures adequate to see what to do, if you already have some background in calisthenics or have some facility for figuring things out between the text and the pics. Mr. Kalym is also well-spoken or else very well-edited--he represents the Royal Marines very well here, treating the reader with respect, neither talking down to him nor being verbose. I consider the system presented in the book to be on a par with the best out there, and would encourage anyone interested in intermediate to advanced bodyweight training to study it.

Just what I've been searching for!!

I've been following the "Convict Conditioning" plan since 2012 with excellent results. But I've been trying to include more gymnastics style training into my routine (Planche, Levers, Human Flag, etc). I've searched on line for progressions for these with limited success.

I was on Amazon and saw this book in the "People who purchased this also purchased these" section. I read the description and the reviews and decided to give it a shot. I am VERY glad I did. This is exactly what I've been looking for. It has similar progression information to Convict Conditioning, but for more exercises. It covers Planche, Levers, and Human Flags along with many others. It gave great information about building strength in the scapula which will improve overall strength and stability.

The book is well written with plenty of pictures showing how to complete each movement.

The nutrition section is brief and basic, but I didn't purchase it for nutritional advice.

I've only had the book for 2 days and I'm already incorporating new exercises described in the book into my routine.

Thank you Ashley Kalym for the great book! I will post back in a year with my results.

10/7/2014 Update: I have begun to incorporate the static holds into my routine and I am already feeling a major difference in my upper body strength. The post workout (next day) muscle soreness feels different then when I am doing my standard repetition work. I am very much enjoying these new static hold exercises.

12/1/2015 Update: L-Sits, Planche, Front Levers & Back Levers have all been incorporated into my regular routine rotation. I now have a set of rings and I built a set of PVC pipe parallettes. I achieved my first back lever (held for 8 seconds) on a bar about a month ago. I can hold good clean L-Sit for 15 seconds on the rings. I am working on the panche (on the rings and parallettes) and front levers (on a bar), but I'm still a long way off from doing those. I also regularly work on ring muscle ups (haven't got these yet) and human flags (I mastered the clutch flag a long time ago). This is a great book and I have recommended it to many people.

The pictures are large and clear. The progressions are well thought out and well explained. The book is well organized.

Each section takes the athlete from very basic – horizontal rows – to very advanced- one arm pullups. There are ample warnings about the dangers and go to slow in these workouts.

The section on diet and life style are simple and practical, not adhering to any specific program other than natural, simple foods with plenty of rest.

The sections on developing your own program are excellent with plenty of guidance to enable the athlete to vary the program as much as he wants.

The sections on workouts are well done and will take the athlete far into strength programs with specific programs for such as the basic fundamentals and the Levers.

Ashley does give us a basic level from which to start. However his programs in this book can get the athlete to these levels. This level is: Pushups 20 reps, Pullups 10 reps, Tricep dips 10 reps, Hanging knee raises 10 reps, and Squats 25 reps. Needless to say, Ashley does state that the performance of these must all be of perfect form.

Recently published are several books on progressive body weight exercise programs. Several of these are excellent. This is one of the best.

I have made several of these designs and the results are excellent. This book would get a 5 star rating if it included charts, which would add another level of clarity to the instructions and would assist those less familiar with American English crochet terms.

Fabulous Designs

I received this book direct from the designer. What a wonderful woman to make these spectacular designs for us. The patterns are clearly written and though advanced, easy to make. Anyone who knows basic crochet stitches should be able to complete these gorgeous designs. I've made all but 2 from this book.

I like the pronunciation guide with its many examples which help to avoid potential confusion. A quick rundown on nouns, pronouns, and verbs is
provided. Additionally, a miniature English-Hebrew/ Hebrew-English dictionary is provided. Past experience has taught me that you can study all
the language books you can afford. but after learning a few words,nouns,pronouns, and verbs, the best way to learn a language is to engage in
conversation. When I was learning Italian years ago in Asmara,Eritrea, I would try to talk with the Italian youths. One Italian proverb I learned was,
" sbagliando, si impara" which means " one learns by making mistakes". It is like learning to walk. At first you take one step and you fall, soon you
are able to take several steps without falling. Learning to converse in a foreign language is very similar to learning how to walk. After serious
practice one becomes more comfortable. Mazal tov!

Excellent Book

As a former student I can say this is another great book from Ruti Yudovich. If you are looking for an easy to understand book for learning Hebrew on your own, this is the one.

Speak Hebrew for Real will be useful for both the beginning
student and the student with some prior knowledge of Hebrew to learn to speak Hebrew
as well as build reading and writing skills. Though I have had prior Hebrew classes, I learned
new vocabulary from this book.

I found, In this compact format, each lesson built on previously a introduced concept and assisted
in expanding knowledge of the language.

The engaging graphics helped in retaining what is learned and the exercises at the end of each
lesson also assist in learning new information.

Like the companion book, Learn How to Read Hebrew for Real, Speak Hebrew For Real will be a great
way to begin the journey to being proficient in Hebrew language.

Ruti does a great job starting out very basic. This book has wonderful sentence building skills, by the end of the book you feel very accomplished. I learned many things in how to speak Hebrew from this book along with great everyday vocabulary. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to read or speak Hebrew!
