Needed More Time

The story is interesting, if a bit complicated, and the author deserves credit for extensive research beyond what has been done before in understanding the scandals of the Harding Administration. But my oh my, where are the editors who are supposed to help turn well researched histories into readable histories? This book badly needed one or more.

“A Time of Scandal” was written by Rosemary Stevens, professor emeritus of the history of sociology and science at the University of Pennsylvania, who specializes in the history of American health care, as a revision of the history of the Department of Veterans Affairs. In 1925, Col. Charles R. Forbes was found guilty, along with Midwestern construction contractor John W. Thompson, of conspiracy to defraud the federal government “by rigging government contracts to build hospitals for military veterans of World War I.” Stevens believes that Forbes almost certainly did not commit this crime but was caught in the anti-corruption furor and personal ambitions that swept the nation, the Justice Department, and Capitol Hill following the death of Pres. Warren Harding in 1923.

The Veteran’s Bureau scandal, Teapot Dome (Department of Interior) and the prosecution of former Attorney General Harry M. Daugherty informed the reputation of the Harding administration as corrupt and of Pres. Harding as ineffectual and naïve. These scandals have been the subject of reanalysis in recent years, and Stevens is perfectly positioned to take another look at Charles R. Forbes’ 18 months at the Veteran’s Bureau and his fall from grace. Senator Warren Harding met Forbes in Hawaii, where Forbes was superintendent of public works. The men became friends, and Harding offered Forbes two positions in his presidential administration, before he accepted the directorship of the Bureau of War Risk Insurance, consolidated into the Veteran’s Bureau in August 1921.

Forbes’ task was to integrate the fiscal, medical, and educational cultures of disparate government agencies into a consolidated system that would serve as a “department of public welfare” for veterans. Forbes may not have possessed the ideal temperament for the job, though he was enthusiastic, tireless, and overworked. The scale of the undertaking was daunting, and Forbes regularly clashed with White House physician and Harding confidant Gen. Charles E. Sawyer over the role of the Veterans Bureau. Then Forbes foolishly became friendly with Washington bootlegger, swindler, and extortionist Elias Harvey Mortimer and his ill-treated wife Katherine, when Mortimer tried to set himself up as a middle man in some hospital construction contracts.

That sealed Forbes’ fate, as Mortimer became an informant and witness-for-hire for the Justice Department in order to save himself from prosecution for bootlegging. As prosecuting corruption, real or imagined, in government became the fashion, Mortimer, a brazen sociopath and inveterate liar, was a convenient weapon to wield against Forbes –and in the promotion of certain politicians and public prosecutors. Senate hearings were convened, steered by Committee Counsel John F. O’Ryan. Then Forbes was prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General John W.H. Crim for allegedly taking a bribe from Mortimer in Chicago. Against all sense, the testimony of other witnesses, and without any other evidence of fraud, judge and jury believed Mortimer’s accusations.

Stevens presents Charles Forbes as perhaps ill-suited to the job and foolish in his friends but a competent and dedicated man who was sacrificed for the betterment of the Veterans Bureau and victimized by the politics and personal ambitions of the day. She bases her analysis on official records, including contemporary investigations into Veterans Bureau affairs under Forbes, and on some personal papers preserved by Forbes’ family and that of his third wife. Unfortunately, most of Pres. Warren Harding’s personal papers, which might have exonerated both the president and Forbes of charges of incompetence, were destroyed after the president’s death. But it is clear that the prosecution did not have evidence of fraud apart from Mortimer’s discredited testimony.

I'm Sorry, Review Is Long, But Please Read How This Book Changed My Life As An Ulcerative Colitis Patient

This book has literally changed my life. I am 29 years old and I have suffered with ulcerative colitis since I was about 15. Recently, my symptoms had progressed. I have always refused modern medical treatment for my symptoms, as I do not believe in putting chemicals into my body and risking adverse problems as a result. I have always tried to treat myself holistically and I have done a lot of research on anti-inflammatory diets as a means of lessening my symptoms. I have done okay, but the flare ups would still come and go. Three months ago, my symptoms became worse than they ever have been before. I would wake up in the middle of the night in cold sweats because my abdominal pain was so bad. I would spend hours in the bathroom in the middle of the night, only to have to wake up at 4am and get to work. I would have chosen to continue to manage this on my own; however, the bleeding became so severe that I started to become very worried. My mom passed away from cancer last year, and when you experience life with a cancer patient with whom you love so dearly, you always worry about such things happening to you. I had a colonoscopy (for the millionth time) and started to see a new GI. I told him right off the bat that I was only seeing him to pretty much ensure that I didn’t have cancer, and that I wasn’t going to accept any medication when offered. He told me that I did have severe inflammation with my ulcerative colitis, and he wanted to put me on 10+ pills a day, including a sedative. I went against medical advice and I started to do further research on what I could do to help myself. That is when I came across this book. I can say, 100%, if you or someone that you know or care about is suffering from colitis, crohn’s, or any IBS symptoms, please read this book. When I read the story of Jordan and I learned all that he went through to heal himself, I was so touched by his choice to really give back and help others by creating his line of holistic supplements and products. I have purchased three of his products, Primal Defense being the first. Eating dirt? Jordan spells it out to make life and our food choices in life so simple. He explains how we need to get back to our roots and eat the foods that God intended for us to eat. Not all of this processed junk that we can hardly call food. Our diets are so awful, and I believe that is why we suffer from so many of the medical ailments that we do. This factor is reconfirmed for me after reading this book. I went from a diet that consisted of nothing but baby food (literally…stockpiled organic baby food, and I don’t even have any kids), to being able to introduce many foods into my diet, including produce and sprouted grains. This book covers all of the necessities, as ‘your Maker intended,’ while also explaining the reason and studies that support each claim. I can say without any reservation that this book and the world-wide knowledge that is provided has changed how I live. It’s awful to always live such a reserved life because you don’t know where a bathroom will be, nor do you want to be embarrassed at how much time you spend in the bathroom while out. What’s the point of seeing a baseball game at all if you are going to spend the entire duration of the game in the bathroom? That has been my life for so long, but no more. I am a manager for a medical practice, and even the doctor that I have worked for during the past ten years was so amazed at my results, that she asked me to order her a copy of this book. My flare ups are few and far between for the first time in nearly 15 years. I cannot say enough how grateful I am to Jordan for sharing his experience with us and developing a plan and a new way of life. I am forever in his debt and I appreciate so much having this book as a tool to help to manage my ulcerative colitis.

Sales Pitch

Before you buy this book, be aware that at least half of it is comprised of promotional writings, testimonies, etc. endorsing products Mr. Rubin's company produces for purchase, the ones which he credits with his own healing. Everything from the soil extracts to the special drinks to the food addiditves -- all are trademarked items, available for purchase. So half of the book feels like a sales pitch (and it's not exactly a clean half, since this runs through the entire book). If this bothers you, I would not recommend the book. The other half -- the parts where there is NO sales pitch -- has some good advice, especially for anyone suffering from IBS or a condition like that. But most of it is the same information you will find from any advocate of natural foods, like Dr. Andrew Weil, the Livestrong website or places like that. So I guess I would say that if you are interested in participating in the same regimen Mr. Rubin did, you are in the right place. If you are looking for changes you can make in your own diet to feel better from what you can purchase in the store or make at home, there are probably better books out there for you.

This book changed my life! Get it today!

This book helped change my life. I was told last summer during an emergency room visit (my first in over 25 years) that I had diverticulitis. I was having spells of illness, 101 fever, and felt awful. Was certain something more serious was happening in there. Well thanks to REVIEWS on Amazon, I stumbled across this guy and his books while researching some intestinal health issues I was having . Bought this book, and started reading and applying. And yes, I even sourced my own local goat milk to help heal my gut. Then within weeks, I started feeling much much better than I had in a long time. And then being about 40 pounds overweight for about 10 years now, the weight started dropping off.....and I also picked up the Wheat Belly book (not same author) and applied that too (eliminated ALL wheat, barley, and rye). I'm happy to say I'm feeling GREAT and my belly is now flat once again after having lost 17 pounds in 3 months (not exercising, just food changes!) I didn't do this for the weight loss, I did it to heal my gut. I was so bloated and pregnant looking it was sheer misery just getting up in the morning; all over stomach pain, discomfort, intestinal issues all over the throughout. I'm a health person, so for this to hit, was quite unusual. My body started screaming ENOUGH already! Do yourself or someone you love that is suffering from any type of stomach/intestinal issues like diverticulitis, IBS and more; gift them this book. And his other books called Restoring Your Digestive Health, and Live Beyond Organic. It changed my life. And it will change yours/theirs. Best wishes to you!

Great book. Very practical and easy to read

This is a great book. It has a lot of practical advice that has clinical applications, not just theory. This is what makes the book different from many of the other anesthesia texts. In addition there are 2 sections of the book that many other books don't cover: how to go about looking for jobs/assessing a practice you might join, and also medical coding and payment. The book is quite easy to read and each chapter or section is short and to the point. The authors and editors of the book are also donating the royalties of the book to the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), which is a great cause.

Good Reference

This is an outstanding collection of pearls for anesthesia providers of all levels from student to the fully qualified. Much of the material was not new after 35 years clinical experience but it made for a great review. The short anecdotal format is a comfortable method to learn and review this type of material. Unlike most anesthesia reference works it is an easy read and makes for nice 5 minute sessions.

I think it would make a good launching point for teaching moments with anesthesia trainees and other interested students. I wish I would have had something like this when I was working with trainees.

interesting reading

This is a great book. Its nice for those with short attention spans like myself as each chapter is short and to the point. Interesting subjects are covered such as cardiac issues, pa catheters, iv access, medications, all kinds of good stuff. I'm an icu rn so some of the material is not relevant to me (nerve blocks, anesthetic gas, medical coding), but I enjoyed most of the book a lot. More readable than lots of other medical books, and most of it is relevant to critical care in some way.

About the Author

Imam Muslim is one of the foremost preservers of ahadith of the Prophet. His book comes second only to Sahih al Bukhari in terms of authenticity according to majority of scholars. It is considered to be better than Sahih Bukhari in terms of organization and repetition according to some scholars of Islam. It is the second in the collection of 6 books called 'Sihah Sittah' or '6 most authentic books'. Imam Muslim took painstaking efforts in preserving the words/actions/sayings and approvals of the Prophet. He has mostly used 4-5 narrators in the chain of transmission although there are a couple of hadith containing 3 narrators. Imam Muslim was a very good student of Imam Bukhari and some of his Shuyukhs, although he did not narrate from Imam Bukhari too much, thus reducing the # of narrators.

As a Muslim must have Sahih Muslim

The publisher (Daarussalam) printed very good and much better than Tafsir Ibn Kathir (2003) and Sahih al-Bukhari (1997).
As a muslim we should do everything based on Al-Qur'an and As-Sunnah (Hadist). Sahih Muslim is one of the best compiled hadist after sahih al-bukhari. So, I strong recommend to every muslim must have it because we can learn by ourself rather than "we are doing TAQLID that mean follow the imam / syaikh and we do not know the original hadist).
